"Only in the last moment in history has the delusion arisen that people can flourish apart from the rest of the living world." - E.O. Wilson

For seventeen years Community Quarterly was the only publication in Australia providing a communication vehicle for community development.

It was started in the 1980s as the initiative of a group of underemployed people who had formed a publishing group Employ – Working Effectively.

Its aims were to publicise what people were doing to achieve positive social change in many areas of social and community development. Not wanting the publication to cease altogether when the journal was threatened, a number of individuals & organisational representatives, former subscribers and contributors joined together to launch a revised and reinvigorated publication in 2003.

New Community aims to continue the longstanding tradition of the original Community Quarterly, and provides a much-needed forum for those interested in community development to stay in touch with each other.
